The Passenger

... After another moment, I still didn't know what to do with my eyes. I couldn't look away. I would like to be able to say that something passed between us in that moment but whatever was passing was only going one way. My heart quickened and I felt the stinging excitement, the intimacy of staring into a stranger's eyes in silence. But nothing was reaching me from whatever lay behind her pupils. Even the visual information I was picking up was hazy: a vague sense of eye colour, the fullness of lips, the soft sheen of skin. My mind was too busy asking thousands of questions to focus on what I was seeing.
